PATAÑJALI'S OPENING GAMBIT: Introduction to the Yoga Sūtra.

Dear Friends in Yoga:
REGISTRATION is now open for our 2026 winter Zoom series with senior Iyengar yoga teacher Mary Reilly, Vedic chant specialist Leslie Freyberg, and yoga philosophy scholar Bob Gilbo.

Whether you're a beginner or seasoned sādhaka, if you're drawn to the bigger picture of yoga or to its most widely-cited source, the Yoga Sūtra of Patañjali, we invite you to join us this winter for PATAÑJALI'S OPENING GAMBIT: Introduction to the Yoga Sūtra.

This three-session Zoom series explores the foundational sūtras that set out the framework for the entire Yoga Sūtra—specifically, the first 12 sūtras of Samādhi Pāda. Through āsana practice, Sanskrit chanting, and philosophy discussion, we'll offer an accessible overview of these quintessential principles.

What You’ll Experience

Each Saturday includes three, 40-minute segments where you’ll:

Practice with Mary (optional) threading key principles through āsana sequences, building a gateway to prāṇāyāma. (A minimum of 6 months of Iyengar yoga practice is recommended.)

Learn to chant sūtras I.1–I.12 in Sanskrit with Leslie using the traditional Vedic method of call-and-response (adhyāyanaṃ)

Delve into these sūtras with Bob from a scholar/practitioner perspective, with clarity and without oversimplifying

Each session concludes with an optional live Q&A from 11:15–11:30 am EST for those who wish to discuss the content further.

Series Details

Dates: Three consecutive Saturdays—January 31, February 7, & February 14, 2026

Time: 9:00–11:30 am EST

Format: Live on Zoom (Can't attend live? Recordings available for 30 days)

What’s Included

Registrants receive recordings within 24 hours (each segment provided separately for ease of study), chant sheets for self-practice, handouts, weekly preview emails with suggested readings and reflection questions, and an annotated bibliography for further exploration. You’ll also have access to a moderated online discussion forum where you can ask questions and share your thoughts.
